We also will not fill from the Beer Engines or

formost and beer loss to foaming,
Thank you for your understanding!
The BREWERY
We started out in 1996 with a tiny, 'frankenstein' 3 bbl system
as authorLew Byson described it. The whole operation was
squeezed into a 9 by 13 foot room in the basement of the
mansion. There we toiled away & made some incredible
beers...but just not enough.
We would come back from our annual week long vacation to a
near empty line up and angry staff & customers.
In 2003 we started renovations on our 4 bay 1930s cement
block garage and by August of 2004 we started brewing. The 7
bbl direct fired brew house we used from 2004-2009 came
second hand from Avery Brewing in Colorado. The remainder
of our equipment we picked up ourselves in  Pittsburgh from
the Foundry in the Strip District.
Over the past five years we added several 8.5 bbl tanks and over
the period of 2008-2009 replaced the mash tun and kettle
with like sized equipment, our mash tun was made in Canada
and our new Kettle was made in western Pa. These bigger vessels
allow us a little more room to brew bigger beers in bigger
batches with fewer headaches.

Our Brewing History

Steve started homebrewing in 1985 and I joined him in 1991. Many of
our  award winning home brews were made in a lobsterman's shack
without running water or central heat on the beautiful coast of Maine
while working at an Inn. One of our pale ales we called Bug Brew after
all the crickets that lived in our well.
In 1993 we moved to Colorado and started working on the bottling line
at New Belgium Brewing Co. We were fortunate to join the company
during a period of tremendous growth and quickly moved through a
variety of positions absorbing every bit of knowledge along the way.
After two years of some wonderful experiences at NBB we moved to
central Pa. to scout out a location for our dream of a brew-pub.
SGB opened on the darkest day of the year in 1996 ...but I'll add more
later... but for now, almost thirteen years and three kids later.... I can't
believe how time has flown!

Hoppy summer!
